How it works?

Persons wishing to get married in Cyprus must personally apply to the registrar in the city of their choice and officially announce their marriage.

This notice (marriage notice) usually requires the following documents (however, please check with us which documents are required in your case):

  • valid passports
  • birth certificates (will be returned)

For German citizens, a registration certificate with a note on marital status from the local administration is usually sufficient.

If the engaged couple is no longer registered in Germany, it is necessary to apply for a certificate of marital status (usually processing takes several weeks at the German registry office).

When considering the case, it is necessary to submit a divorce decree with a final decree (with a mark of entry into force) or a death certificate.

Both parties must also provide an affidavit stating that they have not been married since. If one of the suitors is under 18 years of age and is not a widower (widow), the written consent of the father or mother, or, if both are deceased or incapacitated, the legal guardian is required for marriage.

Documents (other than the passport) must be accompanied by an official translation into English or Greek. In Cyprus, paid translation can only be performed by sworn translators.

A list of these translators can be found on the Press and Information Authority website at

www.pio.gov.cy.

The German Embassy is unable to provide a translation. Marriage can be concluded no earlier than 15 days after the announcement (Notice of Marriage) and no later than 3 months after the announcement.

However, in case of emergency, you can apply at the registry office for a special marriage license, which allows you to marry in three to four days.

If the Cypriot marriage certificate is to be used in Germany, it must be accompanied by a stamp of authenticity (apostille) from the Cypriot Ministry of Justice (see below).

What else should be considered?

Weddings take place from Monday to Friday. Personal registration with the provision of original documents and translations is carried out the day before the wedding in the morning. But there is also an office that does not require an overnight stay, but instead requires certified documents from EU countries.

Weddings take place not only in the registry office, but also in different locations (both outdoors and on the beach). This incurs additional fees depending on location.

Wedding

The language of the ceremony is English or Greek. If you do not understand English or Greek, you will need an interpreter (price: from approx. 70 euros). Witnesses are provided by the registry office free of charge, provided that your wedding takes place during the working hours of the registry office. Your witnesses can also translate if needed.
